In recent years, enzymatic degradation of PET by Ideonella sakaiensis PETase has emerged as a promising strategy to completely depolymerize PET into its building blocks. We rationally designed three mutations in PETase for enhancing its PET-degrading activity, and S238Y mutant showed a degradation activity increased by 3.3-fold in comparison to the wild type enzyme.
